How to import contacts to MDirector via files

Álex García

Importing contacts through files is the most suitable way to handle a large volume of contacts and perform bulk imports. MDirector recognizes the fields in the files and transfers them to the platform fields.

Remember that these files must be in Excel, TXT, or CSV format.

Before importing contacts through files, you need to create a contact list or access the "General" list. If you haven’t done this yet and don’t know how to, visit this article: https://mdirector.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/6693916588946-Contact-List-Management

1. To import contacts through files, the first step is to prepare a file containing the contacts and fields we want to transfer to MDirector. Here is an example:

* Review the format of the cell phone numbers here https://mdirector.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/9228068918556-How-To-Import-Contacts-With-Mobile-Phone-Number and the accepted values or formats for the date, country, province and gender fields in this article https://mdirector.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204780612-Table-of-Codes-Country-State-Gender-and-Date to prepare your contact file for import.

2. Within the list where we want to import them —visible in the second left sidebar panel— open the "Add subscribers" dropdown and select "Import subscribers" from there.

3. This window will open, from which we can select the file.

It is important to pay attention to the checkboxes displayed here.

The first checkbox, 'File has named columns', indicates whether the fields, whether standard or custom, are listed in the first row of the file, as seen in the example earlier. This is highly recommended. If you want to add custom fields, this article explains how to do it: https://mdirector.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201944212-How-to-create-custom-fields

With the 'Delete subscribers and replace them with the new ones' checkbox, we can choose to remove all existing contacts from the list and upload those from the new file.

The third checkbox, 'Replace the labels of duplicate contacts', allows replacing only the tag field value with the one from the new file for contacts that are common to both.

Once you have uploaded the file and reviewed all the checkboxes, click the yellow "Continue" button located at the bottom right of the window.

4. Now, MDirector will display how it has understood the file you provided.

If red fields appear, simply identify them with their corresponding fields through their respective dropdown menus.

When there are no fields in red, you can click the yellow "Continue" button.

5. MDirector will provide you with a final analysis result of the file containing the contacts you are about to import into the list

Here, several details will be broken down:

  • The total number of rows: the rows in the file excluding the header row.
  • The number of contacts that MDirector has identified as duplicates because the email or phone number already existed in the list.
  • The number of records that will be successfully imported.
  • The number of new contacts that will be successfully imported.
  • The number of existing contacts in the list that will undergo modifications.
  • The number of addresses that MDirector has identified as invalid due to formatting issues, e.g., if the email field contains a value without an "@" symbol.
  • The number of addresses that previously resulted in errors during earlier sends.
  • The number of addresses that MDirector has already marked as unsubscribed, and therefore cannot be sent to, as the subscription has been canceled.

6. If you are satisfied with the results of the file analysis, click the yellow "Import" button and go Zto the list to verify that the contacts have been imported correctly.

MDirector will take you directly to this list, but to access it at any time, remember that you can do so from the second side menu that opens in the "Contacts" section of the Email Marketing service.
