Creating a new flow

Josep Martí

You have two ways to start building a flow:

Are you an expert in Marketing Automation? You can start creating a new scenario from scratch and follow the steps that will allow you to define the entry points of the flow, the actions, and conditions by yourself.

  1. Go to Marketing Automation from the sidebar in your account and click on Flows.

2. Press the Create new flow button.

3. You will enter the flow editor.

To design your scenario, you’ll need to understand the three main elements that will help you build your workflow.

1. Add an entry point

Just because someone is on your list doesn’t mean they’ll receive everything you include in the automations. You need to specify when you want someone to enter or not.

For this, the options are:

  • Add a contact to a list
  • Assign a tag
  • Open or read an email
  • Click on a link in an email
  • Based on a date (for any date-type field in the contact list)
  • Modify any data assigned to the contact
  • Send an email
  • Send an SMS

As you can see, there are many situations where an automation can be triggered.

It’s not mandatory for a scenario to have an entry point, as it can also be started from another scenario.

2. Add steps to your flow

Once the entry point is defined, let’s see what steps you can add.

Actions: What do you want to do? Send an email? An SMS? Select the action you wish to perform from these options:

  • Send an email
  • Send an SMS
  • Add a contact to a list
  • Remove a contact from a list
  • Add tags to a contact
  • Remove tags from a contact

3. Add conditions

Now, what conditions do we have to define the path the user will follow? These conditions will let you decide what happens depending on the attributes or interactions of the subscriber with your emails or other external events.

You can create what’s called a flow tree, a series of branches that open based on what happens. Depending on a determined event, the subscriber will follow one path or another.

It might seem complex if you’re not familiar with it, but with MDirector, it’s straightforward in practice.

You’ll be able to:

  • Define waits for each phase to occur at the exact moment you define.
  • Take one path or another depending on a condition: "If something happens, go this way; if not, go that way."
  • Go directly to another branch of the tree.
  • Divide the scenario into multiple options.
  • Start/End an automation. This way, from one automation, you can derive or even end any other where the subscriber is located.

Once your scenario is created, you can perform several actions with it. Check the Scenario List to see the available options and their purposes.
