What are the steps in a Marketing Automation flow?

Josep Martí

The steps of a flow represent the different stages a contact goes through based on their behavior or the fulfillment of certain conditions. They always come after the entry points, and while it's common to include several steps, it's not recommended to create flows that are too long. In such cases, it's better to split them into several simpler flows. These steps are grouped into two main categories: Actions and Conditions & flow.

Actions

Actions are operations you can apply directly to a contact. To add an action, simply click the + icon within the flow editor.

Available options include:

  • Send an email to the contact or another contact

  • Send an SMS to the contact

  • Add the contact to a list

  • Remove the contact from a list

  • Add tag(s) to the contact

  • Remove tag(s) from the contact

  • Call a webhook with the contact's data

These actions allow you to personalize the user experience, trigger automated communications, and update contact information dynamically.

Conditions & Flow

Conditions and flow control elements define the path a contact will follow through the flow, based on their actions or interactions with your messages. You can build branching structures that adjust automatically depending on the criteria met.

Available options include:

  • Wait for a specified period of time

  • Set condition(s) that split into two branches

  • Set conditions that split into multiple branches

  • Send the contact to another flow

  • Go directly to another branch of the flow: this option is not available if it is placed immediately after an entry point.

  • End the flow: this option is not available if it is placed immediately after an entry point.

With these options, you can:

  • Schedule delays between flow stages.

  • Define "if this, then that" logic to route contacts.

  • End or redirect to another automation, making it easy to link multiple flows.
