Correct configuration of the "FROM" and Return-Path (also known as Envelope Domain) is a key aspect in email marketing to ensure the deliverability of your emails. Aligning these two domains not only helps prevent your emails from being marked as spam but also improves authentication and the reputation of your sends.
In this guide, we explain how to configure the alignment of the FROM and Return-Path in MDirector.
What is the Alignment of the "FROM" and "Return-Path"?
- FROM Header: This is the visible field that appears in the recipient's inbox, indicating who the email is from. For example, name@mycompany.com.
- Return-Path (Envelope Domain): This is the domain used to manage bounces and automatic responses (handled by MDirector). Although it is not visible to the recipient, it is crucial for validating the sender's identity.
Why is it Important to Align the "FROM" and "Return-Path"?
The alignment between the "FROM" header and the "Return-Path" can improve deliverability. Some email clients (like Gmail, Outlook, etc.) may verify that both domains match to ensure the email comes from a legitimate source.
Steps to Align the "FROM" and "Return-Path" in MDirector
To correctly align the "FROM" and "Return-Path" in your MDirector account, follow these steps:
- Create a Dedicated Subdomain
It is recommended to create a subdomain for your email sends, for example, news.mycompany.com. Using a dedicated subdomain allows you to separate the reputation of your emails from your main domain. This subdomain can be the same as the custom sender's domain (learn more about custom senders: https://mdtr.io/KBgwS). You can also use the main domain in the "FROM" and the subdomain in the "Return-Path."
If you don't have a subdomain yet, create one like news.mycompany.com through your DNS provider or domain manager.
- Configure the DNS Records
Once the subdomain is created and the required prior authentications are set up, you need to configure the MX records to align the "FROM" and "Return-Path."
The MX records you need to add to your DNS are:
- mta141.1.mdrctr.com
- mta141.2.mdrctr.com
- mta141.3.mdrctr.com
These records point to MDirector's servers, which will manage the traffic of the sent emails. Once configured, they will appear as follows:
Graphical User Interface, Application
Automatically generated description
- Verify the Configuration
After adding the MX records, it is important to verify that everything is set up correctly. To do this, you need to write to support@mdirector.com so our technicians can validate and finalize the configuration.
